A
Vision Becomes Reality
Augury
House was a dream put together by two recovered
alcoholics. The third founding member came
into play when Sharon Verges provided us the
opportunity to make our dream come true. She
believed in our cause and gave us a chance to get
started with use of her property. Augury
House, the staff, and board members are forever
grateful for Sharon because of her foresight in the
dream come true. Sharon Verges, Bill Scowcroft,
and Cliff & Susie Palmer are the founding
members.
Augury
House, a name which came out of the Alcoholics
Anonymous' Big Book, meaning "an omen of a new
life," was formed as a non-profit organization
in June 2008, licensed in November 2008, and started
receiving residents in January 2009.
Since
then, Augury House has purchased the property and
remodeled so that we can handle eight residents.
The bylaws were set up to make sure that this
facility can be here forever. We have also
founded a Gratitude Fund, supplied by grants,
donations, and fundraisers. This will, in
turn, allow a person a chance to get help.
Messages
from the Founding Members
Cliff
Palmer: Do you ever get complacent with life,
where you feel everything is all mapped out for you?
That is the way it was for me. I was coming
close to retiring from a career as a professional
truck driver. Then, on January 8, 2008, my
life completely turned around when I needed
emergency open heart surgery. The surgery was
a success but I could no longer drive. The
$64,000 question was, "What did God keep me
alive for?" That was when the seed was
planted to start Augury House Limited and that is
what got us here today. I can honestly say
that learning how to live sober and let go &
help other people are the reasons for success in my
life today. It is surprising how, when you
help other people, your own life turns out for you.
I am grateful for all the people that helped make
this dream become a reality!
Susan
(Susie) Palmer: I have been involved in the
Al-Anon side of alcoholism for the past 30 years.
Over the years, Cliff and I have had many recovering
people stay in our private home. I have worked
in the medical field all my life and enjoy helping
people. I have found this very rewarding to
watch people grow and change their lives. It
is wonderful to watch families settle their problems
and grow together again. I truly believe in
the work that is being done at Augury House and hope
that maybe we can help someone that you love.
Bill
Scowcroft: I am a Clinical Substance Abuse
Counselor who is retired after 36 years of
employment in this capacity. I am grateful for
my own recovery and for the opportunity I have
experienced in helping others afflicted by the
disease of chemical dependency. My feeling of
gratitude has lead me wanting to return what has
been so graciously given to me in my recovery and
career. I've been presented the opportunity to
partner with Cliff & Susie Palmer and Sharon
Verges in co-founding and establishing Augury House
Limited, for which I am grateful. I continue
my involvement with Augury House as a member of the
Board of Directors. I thank you for your
interest in our facility.
Sharon
Verges: I have been working in law
enforcement for over 16 years and have seen what
alcohol and drug addictions can do to people and
their families. I was so excited when I found
out that the house I used to live in was going to be
turned into Augury House. I knew that Cliff
and Sue, as well as all of the other people
involved, would be able to do wonderful things for
those that are struggling to change their
life. After seeing it come together over the
last few years, I can see that this home and their
program is making positive changes in many
lives. I am thrilled to be part of this and
know that many new lives will result from Augury
House.
